Latin Rhythm at Pleasure Island By Doris Irizarry
A diverse Latin atmosphere surrounded the West End Stage at Pleasure Island in Walt Disney World to celebrate the Sixth Annual Latin Rhythm Festival. They were from Florida, outside of Florida, tourists. Non Latins were also seen enjoying the festival. It was Latin music, though a few artists sang in English, and savory Latin food to enlighten the hearts of young and old.
This years three night festival will be edited for two televised special programs to be aired by Telemundo within the next few months including in Puerto Rico. In previous years pioneers and new Latin artists aiming towards stardom of the caliber of Gilberto SantaRosa, Barrio Boyzz, MDO, Marc Anthony, Tito Puente, DLG, just to mention a few, have filled the streets of Pleasure Island with rhythmic sounds of salsa, merengue, tex-mex, ranchero, pop, ballads... The same was repeated this year.
Anxious fans were awaiting for the gates to Pleasure Island to open in order to situate themselves as close as they could to the front of the stage. They wanted to applaud for their favorite artists, as well as sing and dance. The opening night was undertaken by Corvo, Melina León, Guadalupe Esparza known as Lupe Esperza, Límite and Alicia Villareal, Los Toros Band, Patrick Shannon, Luis Fonsí, Mijares, and Oscar D'León. A fortunate spectator had the priviledge in dancing with Oscar D'León on stage.
The second evening was entertained by Karis, Control, Limit-21, Jyve V, Yolanda Roya, and Frankie Negrón. Frankies eyes shone as he saw a dear Tampa friend among the audience whom danced proudly with a poster of his in her hands. Frankie is currently learning to produce his own work. Eventually one of his recordings will be produced by him.
Scattered light showers throughout the third evening neither dampened the final day of the Ritmo Latino festival nor it's spectators. Everyones umbrellas quickly were closed at the request of the stage manger inorder to commence with Emanuel Ortega (son of Pablo Ortega), Paye, Fifth Vision, Lenny Medina, Gisselle, MDO, and adding a close to the three day festival was Charlie Zaa with his upbeat song "La Pollera Colora".
The artists were magnificent. A few of the artists haven't been heard on the Latin radio stations. Among them Fifth Vision, whom were invited to open for Cristina Aguilera's two hour special tour for Disney Channel, sang in English and in Spanish. Lenny Medina, ex-member of the Illegals (Ilegales), with an absence of three years from the music world returned with as much will to give the best of himself. Patrick Shannon commented he was an American singing in Spanish and whom loves Latin women. Yolanda Roya, a beautiful Colombian and singer of the theme song to the Spanish soap opera 'Betty The Ugly' ('Betty La Fea'), danced to her rhythmic interpretations. Yolanda is surprised and happy with the success of both the song and the soap opera which she didn't expect. And Jyve V surpised everyone with their different performance from the others with their sounds of pop, hip hop, techno, and their choreography.
The Seventh Ritmo Latino Festival is anxiously awaited for. (Click here for more photos)
